Earlier this week I had an idea strike me out of nowhere. It really began in my mind as a journal prompt for myself. But then I thought, why not share with you all too?

If you are like me, maybe you have struggled with living life on autopilot. We have daily routines that we have to get through to survive; it is just a fact of life. Last year, we took a deep dive together into the concept of mindfulness. As we learned, we often have to live our lives in the doing mode or autopilot. We drive, walk, eat, even speak without clear awareness of what we are doing. Mindfulness requires we switch gears and enter ito the being mode. We choose what to do next, rather than run on old worn-out habits. When we reinhabit our present moment and become fully conscious of our lives, we are living mindfully. In today's article, we are going to take mindfulness and apply it in a different sort of way to help us gain clarity about the kind of life we want to live. Because when we are in doing, survival, got to get things done mode, we don't truly have time to pause and reflect on what it is we really want and who it is we really want to be. I have a fun, yet thought provoking exercise for you this article. Consider it a coaching freebie.

Imagine, just for a moment, that your life was a Wikipedia page. Not a dry, factual one, but a vibrant, detailed entry that captures the essence of you. What would it say? What headings would exist? What fascinating footnotes would appear? We often live our lives on autopilot, running through routines and responding to external demands. But what if we paused and considered the "Wikipedia version" of our existence? It's a fun, slightly absurd, but deeply insightful exercise that can illuminate what truly matters to us.

What would your main headings be?

Let us start with the basics. What would your main headings be?

  • Early Life: What pivotal moments or influences shaped your childhood? What anecdotes would capture the spirit of your younger self?

  • Education: What did you learn, both formally and informally? What were your most impactful intellectual experiences?

  • Career: What milestones would be highlighted? What contributions would be noted?

  • Personal Life: What relationships, hobbies, or passions would take center stage?

  • Achievements and Contributions: What are you most proud of? What impact have you made on the world, however small?

  • Legacy: What do you hope to be remembered for?

Let's Talk About Subheadings

Now, let's delve deeper. What subheadings would appear? If I were to stop by your Wiki page, under Personal Life, would I find sections dedicated to your travels? Are there places that have shaped your perspective and experiences? What are your crafts? Would there be a section highlighting your artistic expressions, from writing and painting to music or innovative ideas? What about the Career section? What would be your most memorable achievements? Would there be a Published Works section showcasing articles, books, or research that left a mark? Some of you out there are community activists. What projects have you been a part of that showcase your contributions to causes close to your heart, detailing the ways you’ve given back to your community or the world? Would there also be a section for Defining Relationships, honoring the friendships, mentors, or family connections that have influenced you most?

Flesh it Out

If someone were summarizing your life in a few sentences, what key words would they use? More importantly, would their words be aligned with how you see yourself? Each of us have patterns or themes that occur over and over in our lives. What are yours? Are these patterns or themes connected to any notable controversies are challenges you have had to face? How would this section read on how you overcame it? What are some fun facts that most people would find surprising to learn about you? And lastly, if you could make any edits to your page right now, what would you change?

I would love to hear from you! Drop a comment and share one section your Wikipedia page would absolutely include!

This exercise isn't about creating a perfect, polished image. It's about gaining clarity on your values, passions, and aspirations. It's about recognizing the narrative you're currently writing and empowering yourself to edit it. This exercise encourages deep introspection, leading to greater self-awareness. By visualizing your "Wikipedia page," you can identify areas where you want to grow and set meaningful goals and connect with your sense of purpose. This exercise helps us to acknowledge the complexities of our lives, including challenges and setbacks that we have faced. But mainly, this exercise is about empowerment. It reminds you that you are the author of your own story, and you have the power to shape your future.

So, grab a pen and paper, or open a digital document, and start drafting your "Wikipedia page." Embrace the absurdity, explore the possibilities, and discover the extraordinary story that is uniquely yours. You might be surprised at what you find. And to take this exploration even further, I'd love to help you delve into the themes that emerge. If you're feeling intrigued, curious, or perhaps even a little overwhelmed by what you're discovering, consider scheduling a coaching session with me. We can work together to:

  • Unpack the insights from your "Wikipedia page" exercise.

  • Identify patterns and recurring themes.

  • Clarify your values and aspirations.

  • Develop actionable steps to create the life you truly desire.

Your Wikipedia page is always a work in progress, open to revisions and updates as you continue to evolve. Let's work together to make it a masterpiece.
